Text and vocals by Jean-Marc Lederman
lyrics
The expression “Blue Note” was first mentioned by the female writer George Sand, herself a good pianist, when describing Frédéric Chopin . He was often, when playing for friends, fooling around with notes on the keyboard up to the moment where he felt he had found the right mood and chord for the following piece of music. It was often emotional if not nostalgic. George called it la note blue, or “the blue note.”
It was 1841....
On the other side of the Atlantic, African-Americans were mixing religious gospel chants and work songs coming from the horrible years of slavery to create a new form of music. This new form of music often told the sadness and hopes of the singer.
We’re in 1875.
It would soon take the name of blues as in "blue devils" and is derived from the French word blue, bleu. In order to marry the harmonies of African-born vocals and European based musical instruments like the piano or the guitar, new harmonies and scales were invented. These new intervals were called “the blue notes”...
Blues and ragtime were the main music styles played in the famous brothel zone in New Orleans known as Storyville, and a new form of music came out of that: Jazz. The name comes from Jass, meaning liveliness, excitement, and spirit.
We’re now in 1917…)
Some twenty years later, three Jewish men in Brooklyn created a label they would dedicate to jazz. These releases were paramount as establishing jazz as a vital form of music. We’re in 1939...That label was called "Blue Note"…
I went back to this song 10 or so years after Jane's Addiction wrote this and reloved it. You guys just reminded me of how great the song is. I love this album already. I'll always have this version nearby 😁
Thank You Emileigh & Lederman 🤘 punkyitz
