Textbooks for Tomorrow Going to start a chapter Going to make you write it down Going to take it from town to town Yeah, you may not understand it now And we’ll need a recording They’ll all need to play it back They’ll all need to try and crack all the reasons we fell into the black Stare into the future See students all looking lost See the teachers, they’re marking off See them shake their heads at one more holocaust We are the wars that they will judge We are the fashions that will see them laugh We are the tech that they will mock We are the science of getting it wrong The textbooks for tomorrow
2.
All that I Believe in Fails Me I’m crazier every day Or maybe it was you ‘Cos I know I don’t feel this way when I’m alone, it’s true Inside of my head in spins Outside the world it turns This feeling comes round again as I watch it burn I still don’t believe in fate Until I start to lose These questions are aggregate All that I Believe in Fails Me Nothing is absolute unless it has a use These questions might be the proof that All that I Believe in Fails Me All that I Believe

My Wilhelm Scream I thought I heard a voice I swear I heard it twice It was something like a distant howl Maybe it’s calling me? Or better warning me? Should I offer some resistance now? I’ll wait for the moment to meet you again in the dark I’m heading back home with the knowledge we’ll soon be apart ‘Cos these things remind me of days spent just wondering why I bow to the scream that’s just marking another lost night Another lost night Another lost I thought I heard a voice I swear as cold as ice I’ll wait for the moment to meet you again, who knows where? I’ll find me a home where I feel just that little less scared When all things remind me of days spent just keeping alive I’ll bow to the scream that is marking another lost night Another lost night
4.
Shifting Sands Shifting sands Those new demands Brought to you by the State So where’s this man? And was it planned? And what went wrong? Under who’s command? Just what did he undertake? All the lies They soon capsize They sink along with the freight Some facts survive They trace your ties Better change your tune Better reconcile ‘Cos what did you undertake? Everybody’s shifting Shifting sands They soon disband The sandman beats you awake Well, I’ll be damned for what I can’t withstand Just watch for sharks when you extend your hand And what did they undertake?

about

LEDERMAN * STEIN "Textbooks for Tomorrow"
4 tracks EP digital-only release date: 18/10/2020

Forging together two considerable forces in leftfield electronic music, ‘Textbooks for Tomorrow’ is the debut collaboration between Jean-Marc Lederman (The Weathermen, The The, Fad Gadget, Ghost & Writer,...) and Erik Stein (Cult With No Name).

Lederman’s masterfully constructed electronic backdrops provide the perfect setting for Stein’s distinctive baritone, beguiling melodies and compelling lyrics. Each of the E.P.’s four tracks explores very different sonic and melodic territory, whilst retaining a subtle dissonance and faded grandeur throughout.

The E.P. fizzes into life with the title track, a swirling mix of warm analogue and modular electronics that soon explode into a sweeping and anthemic chorus. Next up, ‘All That I Believe in Fails Me’ presents us with a kind of world-weary synth pop that disguises its cynical message behind a wall of irresistibly childlike melodies and hooks.
The nighttime atmosphere of ‘My Wilhelm Scream’ flirts with jazz riffs and phrasing, meanwhile closing track ’Shifting Sands’ breaks from the electronics altogether to present a dark tale of state corruption and deceit against a haunting backdrop of rolling pianos.

This E.P. is anything but textbook and, much like Lederman and Stein’s other works, ‘Textbooks for Tomorrow’ sits as something quietly unique. EDM? IDM?
Or simply IDK as in I Don’t Know?
