preciousken This album travels back to the beginning, when music decided to tap into something primal and internal. A circulatory system of connection and automation. Jean-Marc has a level of talent and skill that often leaves me flabbergasted. The greatest of which is an ability to create an emotional connection without reaching. Listening to this album never feels like a production or manipulation. It’s a ticket I bought, a seat on a magical vessel of experience and sensation. Favorite track: Didn't Your Mama Tell You How To Behave.

The expression “Blue Note” was first mentioned by the female writer George Sand, herself a good pianist, when describing Frédéric Chopin . He was often, when playing for friends, fooling around with notes on the keyboard up to the moment where he felt he had found the right mood and chord for the following piece of music. It was often emotional if not nostalgic. George called it la note blue, or “the blue note.” It was 1841.... On the other side of the Atlantic, African-Americans were mixing religious gospel chants and work songs coming from the horrible years of slavery to create a new form of music. This new form of music often told the sadness and hopes of the singer. We’re in 1875. It would soon take the name of blues as in "blue devils" and is derived from the French word blue, bleu. In order to marry the harmonies of African-born vocals and European based musical instruments like the piano or the guitar, new harmonies and scales were invented. These new intervals were called “the blue notes”... Blues and ragtime were the main music styles played in the famous brothel zone in New Orleans known as Storyville, and a new form of music came out of that: Jazz. The name comes from Jass, meaning liveliness, excitement, and spirit. We’re now in 1917…) Some twenty years later, three Jewish men in Brooklyn created a label they would dedicate to jazz. These releases were paramount as establishing jazz as a vital form of music. We’re in 1939...That label was called "Blue Note"…

It made no difference how we, we mistook those summer days Strumming still strumming away We took the stage allowed no matter what we played it turned off their absent gaze Wandered away without A darkened soul needed some light Marched off right into the night Gave in tired of the long fight Nothing left to lose, it felt so right One note too far he crossed that road bold and ready as the devil stood One note too far And there for all his dreams the devil took everything that he knew he could One note too far For the music to be good An empty soul was yearning to be filled, All of the troubles gone Crowds feeling that he belonged The devil played along and carried every song and yes they captured every gaze Walking away with new praise The deal took hold his songs were gold Every dark stage night was sold And no one knew if the legend there was true From one guitar they swore that they heard two One note too far the devil took his due And no one really knew if the legend there was true Strumming still strumming away The music walks again Songs of souls will never end

about

Jean-Marc Lederman’s "Soul Music For Zombies" is a singular voyage through music and atmospheres that collide, as always with JML, in the most interesting fashion. What happens when soul vocals are combined?
music to an industrial backing song? Or opera to ambient? Or acapella to electropop? Or hyper pop to dark music? And why is the Blue Note such a permanent fixture in all this? The result is surprising and fun here, emotive there, and exciting and even danceable on some tracks.
